About WideSprout Español
WideSprout Español is a free online Spanish course for English speakers, built around one simple idea: learn Spanish one minute a day.

Every lesson is a short, hand-painted animated video of about 60 seconds. It teaches one clear topic: the Spanish alphabet, numbers, greetings, everyday phrases or a key piece of grammar. Lessons follow a set order, so you always know what comes next. You start at absolute beginner (A1) and work up to confident, independent Spanish (B2).
Learning a language rarely fails because people aren’t clever enough. It fails because the plan is too big, too vague, or too easy to put off until tomorrow. WideSprout Español fixes that by giving you a small, clear step every day, the kind you can take with your morning coffee, on your commute or in a work break.
What WideSprout Español Does
We teach Spanish through daily micro-lessons: short, focused videos that each cover a single idea and build on the one before. There’s no endless scrolling through random vocabulary. You follow a real course, organised into levels and chapters, from your first “hola” to holding a real conversation.
Every lesson is explained in English, so complete beginners never feel lost. The Spanish words and phrases are spoken slowly and clearly, often twice, so you can hear exactly how they sound and say them back. Each video ends with a short “repeat after me” moment, because speaking out loud from the very first day is one of the most useful habits a new learner can build.
How Every 60-Second Lesson Works
Every WideSprout Español video follows the same simple, proven structure, so your brain knows what to expect and can focus on the Spanish:
-
1
Hook
The hook
A quick question or challenge that shows why today’s lesson matters (“Can you say hello three different ways?”).
-
7
7 teaching beats
Seven teaching moments
Seven short beats, each showing one word, phrase or rule with a clear painted picture, so you understand the meaning even before the explanation finishes.
-
Speak
Repeat after me
A short pause for you to say the key phrase out loud.
-
Recap
Recap and goodbye
The one thing to remember, a friendly Spanish farewell, and a peek at tomorrow’s lesson.
Alongside every video, the lesson page gives you everything you need to make the lesson stick:
A short grammar or pronunciation note in plain English.
A “common mistake” tip to help you avoid the errors English speakers usually make.
Spain vs Latin America notes wherever the two differ, such as the “th” sound in Spain or the use of “ustedes” across Latin America.
Three quick practice exercises with an answer key, so you can check yourself.
A Structured Spanish Course From A1 to B2
WideSprout Español follows the CEFR levels (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), the standard used by schools, universities and official Spanish exams such as the DELE. That gives your learning a clear map and a sense of real progress.
A1 (Beginner). This is where everyone starts. The A1 course has 46 lessons in six chapters:
- Sounds and the Spanish Alphabet: all 27 letters, the five pure vowels, tricky consonants like the rolled “rr”, and how accent marks and upside-down question marks work.
- Numbers: counting from zero to one hundred, and using numbers for your age, phone numbers and prices.
- Greetings and Introductions: hello, goodbye, how are you, what’s your name, please and thank you, and when to use “tú” or “usted”.
- Grammar Foundations: subject pronouns, the verbs ser, estar and tener, masculine and feminine words, plurals, adjective agreement, present-tense verbs, questions and negatives.
- Everyday Vocabulary: days, months, telling the time, colours, family, food and drink, countries, nationalities and jobs.
- Everyday Conversations: ordering at a café, asking for directions, shopping, talking about what you like, making plans, describing your day and the weather. The level ends with your first full self-introduction in Spanish.
A2 (Elementary). Next, you’ll learn to talk about the past, use reflexive verbs and object pronouns, and make comparisons. You’ll also handle real-life situations like travel, restaurants, hotels, health and invitations.
B1 (Intermediate). At B1 you’ll add the future, the conditional and the present subjunctive, and master tricky pairs like “por” and “para”. You’ll learn to give opinions, tell stories, and handle work, study, phone calls and emails in Spanish.
B2 (Upper Intermediate). Finally, B2 brings the past subjunctive, conditional sentences, reported speech and natural connectors, plus idioms, formal writing, debate and an ear for regional varieties of Spanish.
Each level builds on the one before. A new lesson arrives every day, so the course grows step by step and you’re never asked to jump ahead before you’re ready.
Who WideSprout Español Is For
WideSprout Español is designed for teens and adults who speak English and want to learn Spanish in a way that fits real life. It’s a great fit if you:
- are a complete beginner who wants a clear place to start;
- are planning a trip to Spain or Latin America and want useful, everyday phrases;
- studied Spanish at school and want to rebuild your foundations properly;
- live in or are moving to a Spanish-speaking country and need practical conversation skills;
- want to work toward a recognised level such as A2 or B1;
- have only a few minutes a day and want those minutes to count.
Why Short Daily Lessons Work
Language learning rewards consistency more than intensity. A few focused minutes every day keep new words fresh and turn practice into a habit, which is why most learners do better that way than with one long session a week. Short lessons are also easier to rewatch. Missed something? Play it again. Want to review before moving on? Every lesson stays available, in order, whenever you need it.
We also believe that seeing a word makes it easier to remember. That’s why every Spanish word in our videos is paired with a painted picture of its meaning: a cat for “gato”, a sunny plaza for “buenos días”, a steaming cup for “un café con leche”. You connect the Spanish word to the image, not just to an English translation.
