Every morning, an old man on Julia’s train reads the same page of the same book. One day she asks him why.
A short story told in the past: the imperfect sets the scene (todas las mañanas, leía…) and the preterite tells what happened (un día, se sentó…). Read it to the end before you answer: the ending explains everything.
